FIFA officials are confident the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada will go off without a hitch, despite the tournament being played on artificial turf for the first time.
I am certain a few whiny, pampered players will come out and complain. (*cough*) and I’ll give you a hint…. red, white and blue.
Let’s just say that not every country can provide a PERFECT environment.
We have fair weather, SAFETY, interest, passion and great accommodation, support and respect.
I am not saying that there are not MASSIVE inequalities between the men and women’s game.
However, Canada isn’t exactly guilty of ignoring the needs of the women’s squad - particularly when the CANWNT is far superior in rankings than their male counterparts.
Canadians know this. We support our women.
We love them and adore them.
In addition to hockey, this women’s football squad are the most noted and celebrated athletes in this country.
The reality is that globally, not every nation will be able to provide the same in terms of infrastructure.
The reality is that if Canada was NOT up to par, it would not have been given this opportunity.
Girls’ soccer participants in North America has more than tripled in the last two decades. It is only gaining momentum.
The exposure for females athletes and the potential to bring certain skilled yet unknown INternational footballers to the limelight is incredible.
I want to see the women play. I want to take my daughter and sons.
I want to applaud them and their potential and their inspiration.
Canada wants to support and celebrate them.
We are the HOSTS of the Women’s World Cup.
And we may not be as big boxed as the USA but we are generous and wonderful and *ahem* humble.
We will put on a FANTASTIC WOMEN’S WORLD CUP, insha’Allah.
Every player will see that.
As long as they give us a chance and stop complaining.
Of course not every nation is able to accommodate 100% of what the players want and that’s understandable (ex. Qatar 2022 WC is going to be an interesting fight for players), but for Canada to try and say that the only players upset over having to play on artificial turf are a few members of the USWNT is ridiculous. The Canadian MNT refused to play on artificial turf for the 2014 WC qualifiers. That’s right, the CANADIANS didn’t like it either and I don’t recall you calling your MNT members whiners for refusing to play like you are saying about the USWNT for starting a call for action towards FIFA. That was just for the qualifiers, not the entire WC tournament. You didn’t see the USWNT complaining about having to qualify on turf in Canada for the 2012 Olympics. So what did FIFA do to accommodate the Canadians that didn’t want to play on artificial turf? They rolled out sod to cover the turf. Something that FIFA is refusing to do for the 2015 WWC. So, the USWNT players that are upset over the turf aren’t targeting you, Canadian soccer fans, players, or your infrastructure any more than the Canadian MNT were when they refused, the USWNT members are calling out FIFA’s gender discrimination for appeasing the men and not the women for the same exact complaint.
